HOPLAND, Mendocino County — October 23, 2026. People driving or walking through downtown Hopland should expect construction activity along U.S. Highway 101 for the remainder of October. The Caltrans Hopland 101 Project page lists the current Phase 5A through October 31, 2026, covering sidewalk demolition and reconstruction from Mountain House Road to Center Road in one direction and between First Street and the north end of the construction area in the other.
What changes for drivers?
Caltrans warns of occasional delays of up to 10 minutes between the Feliz Creek Bridge and the north end of the project. The posted speed limit is reduced to 25 mph inside the work zone. These are expected effects rather than a statement that a traffic jam is underway at this exact moment. Check Caltrans QuickMap for conditions before leaving.
What about pedestrians and businesses?
Sidewalk work requires temporary pedestrian detours, and some driveways or curbside parking may be affected. Caltrans says businesses remain open during construction. Alternate parking is available near the Great Redwood Trail Agency parking area, and public signs identify some permitted locations. Follow posted site directions rather than cross a closed sidewalk or construction lane.
What is the purpose of the project?
The improvements address Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility, including curb ramps, sidewalks and driveways. They also include pavement rehabilitation, signage and changes supporting safer travel for people walking, cycling and driving. State transportation projects must balance access during construction against worker and public safety.
When will it end?
The project’s current schedule says construction began in July 2026 and targets completion in November 2026. A target date can move due to weather, underground utilities or other conditions. Caltrans should be treated as the authoritative source for current work limits, reopening dates and any revised schedule.
How can residents ask about construction?
Caltrans lists 707-994-9362 for project questions and HoplandADA@dot.ca.gov for comments. Its project page carries photographs of July, August, September and October construction progress. Report an unsafe access condition to the responsible authority, and call emergency services for imminent danger.
